faaslave Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 Well here comes one that will test even JT and Fenton, The file is attached, and Admin, password = Admin will get you in. This file for some reason is not modifiable, at least that is what it says. I am logged in as Admin and yet it tells me to stick it. I can't even change my password. What's up with that? Is Filemaker trying to see if I will throw my computer? Alrighty then, here goes: The current database is set up for a hairstylist to be able to invoice and keep track of things. I have an items table, some products(taxable) and some services(non-taxable). I also have an inventory table, this was for the hairstylists own stuff, not stuff she would sell. (by the way JT an Detlev had to use a 2X4 across my head just to get this far). Now I find that this current configuration doesn't really work well for her needs. And the more I think about it, I want to change it a bit. Here is what I am thinking, and I would love to hear opinions on the best way to go about this, or if it is not possible. The way I want it now is as follows: Inventory would consist of Services(non-taxable) and Products(taxable), Products having a quantity, and Services having a quantity for invoices, but the on-hand amount should be limitless. (of course) This gets rid of the items table. Her products would be in here whether she sells them or not. For example hairstylists have bottles of color they buy, but they don't sell them. On the other hand, a bottle of shampoo would be for sale, or she may use it herself in the salon on customers. So she may sell a bottle on an invoice, which would subtract one from inventory, she might have one stolen, or just use one on clients. So there would have to be some way to expense this item. There would be a cost and a retail price on these products, and some might just have a cost. Also I would need a way to say, look at this quantity for this item and when it is <? it shows up on a reorder supplies report. I think I know what fields I need to get started, but some of the logic here seems inconceivable. (Princess Bride) So most important, is this possible? if so, should I keep the items she will not sell for sure separate? products for sale, products not for sale, and services. (this might cause me problems later if I do that though) And how to show the business used an item, or lost one to theft, etc. Anyone willing to listen to all this blabber and respond, thank you very much Dave
Garry Claridge Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 I'm able to access the file, change records and add records. I guess that the file may be "locked" in the OS. Good Luck. Garry
Reed Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 I'm also able to modify the file.... another possibility, is that the permissions aren't set right in the OS. Did you try to download the file that you've posted and open that one?
faaslave Posted November 9, 2004 Author Posted November 9, 2004 I have full access to the DB, except that I can't change my password, delete a user, etc. That is when this problem crops up. I am stuck with the users and privledges set.
Garry Claridge Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 So, you have "Read and Write" access to the DB via the OS. That is, if you do an "Apple-i" on the database icon and look at "Ownership and Permissions" you have "Read and Write" access! Good Luck. Garry
faaslave Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 It did for owner, but not for group, I changed it to read and Write, and problem fixed. THANKS!! Now if I can only get the rest of my question figured out. I hope it is that easy. haha Dave
Vaughan Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Perhaps the "Admin" account is not really [Full Access}?
faaslave Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 It is, and it works now. very strange Dave
faaslave Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 After talking with Fenton, I realize some things I didn't think of. This is in reference to the meat of the original post. 1) I will need a PO form, or some way to add items to stock. That makes sense. 2) There needs to be a way to invoice out the lost items, stolen, etc. I need to figure out how to do this, or use the current invoice system to invoice it to myself, or something similar to that. This part seems like it will be difficult. 3) building a transactional inventory system that increments and decrements stock levels involves complex scripting, which may be over my head. Anyway, any ideas are welcome, and if anyone has an example of how they have used an inventory/invoicing system, I would love to see it. Thanks Dave
Ender Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Hi Dave, I don't know if this helps, but attached is an ER Diagram of a basic invoice system. I don't know where the original post was that this was for, but it was a discussion about invoice design a few months back.
faaslave Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 Thank you very much, The original post is at the top of this very thread. But the first part of it referenced read & write access. That part has been resolved. Thanks Dave
