[FMS-7] Best practice to modify solution?

What is the best practice for modifying a FileMaker solution hosted on FMS7? Can FMP client run on the server hardware alongside FMS? With FMS down, can the FMP client be used to do design changes to the solution at the server machine (on a copy, of course)? Can the FMP client be up at the same time as Server?

Can all design functions be done from a remote machine with admin priveliges? Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

FM solutions may be modified while being served, by another machine running FMP client, even when other clients are using the solution. I have been told that FMS7 even allows field definitions to be changed while others are using the solution, but I would probably not feel comfortable with this level of database change. Never run FMP at the same time as FMS on the same machine, database corruption can occur. You may close the database under FMS and then open with FMP on the server machine, but I tend to do all my work on a client allowing FMS to run backups. All design can be done from a client (remote) machine.

Thank you Doug, this answers all my questions. As you can imagine from my question, I'm putting up a networked solution using FM Server-7 for the first time (in a week or so) and needed to figure out the best way to go about design modification ahead of time. Thanks again.

I would never copy open files. Although FMS or FMP will open these files, they could become corrupted. Always close the file prior to copying or copy backup files created by FMS.
