epr Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 Hi all, i'm planning to develop an small applitacion (5 to 10 DB tables) using File Maker Pro. I used to develop applications before, but i'm new to file maker. I would really appreciate any recommendation about which documentation i should use (books, etc...). thanks in advance for help
transpower Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 If you're an advanced programmer, read Using FileMaker 7 by Lane, et. al. If you're an intermediate-level programmer, read Learn FileMaker Pro 7 by Stars. If you're a beginner, read FileMaker Pro for Windows and Macintosh by Hester. Another useful book is The Book of FileMaker by Kubica.
epr Posted December 4, 2004 Author Posted December 4, 2004 Thanks a lot for your help. I'll use *both) recommendations. This is the first place were I get info, actually i don't have the software yet. I'm just trying to know a little bit of this software before starting. I have been developing applications, but on a different environments. This is my first 'contact' with FM. Also i was wondering, to start building my app, i only need File Maker pro 7 Server (i'm thinkin' on advanced for web capabilities); and FM pro 7 Developer??.. Please let me know if i'm wrong. P.D: Yes i'm newbie on this........ Thanks again.
Fenton Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 If you have FileMaker 7 Developer there was a deal from FileMaker where you could get a copy of Server Advanced for the unbelievable price of $10, basically the cost of mailing you the CD (which is all you get, but that's all you need). You're only supposed to use it for your own purposes, ie., learning and testing (and I have no idea, nor do I care if it's limited, 'cause that's all I use it for). I don't know if the offer is still available, but I took advantage of it a while ago. I think they felt that the high cost of Server Advanced was going to keep many developers from moving right along with web development, that developers don't really use Server Advanced like a business person would.
epr Posted December 4, 2004 Author Posted December 4, 2004 Thanks a lot for your help fenton, i'll try to check that too. But i think that i'll get special pricing because i work on the education industry, and the pricing it's a little bit lower than normal (i guess) Thanks again.
