December 6, 200421 yr Newbies Sorry for this lame newbie post, but I've been using Filemaker rather basically since v5.5 and now I'm trying something and have no idea. I'm trying to set up a relational database that is all the records from on database with a specific field, "hard drive 2," for example. Is this possible? Thanks
December 6, 200421 yr Author Newbies Sorry? I'm guessing I wasn't specific enough--but I don't know the terminology. Is it possible, by whatever means, to set up a layout that automatically only shows files with a specific field value? "Garage" or something. Thanks
December 6, 200421 yr Yes, it is possible. If by "files" you mean "records," one approach would be to have a global field where you enter text or choose from a value list. Set up a relationship thisGlobalField::relatedField and show the related records in a portal.
December 6, 200421 yr If I'm understanding you correctly, you need a relationship based on the location. You can do this using a Global Field on the left side of your relationship and the Location field on the right side. Click here for a similar thread that I attached a sample file showing how this can be done. Let us know if more detail is needed, or if this isn't what you need. HTH Lee
December 6, 200421 yr You'll want to read up on the terminology in order for our advice to mean much. It sounds like what you are asking for is to see a portal of records that are related by a field. This is a pretty basic capability of FileMaker (look up portals and relationships in the User Guide for simple examples.) It simply involves creating a relationship between one field in the first table and a corresponding field in the second table (It's hard to give specifics without understanding what your database is about.)
December 6, 200421 yr Author Newbies Thanks guys, it looks like this is what I need to do so now all I need is to sit down and get to work on it. Really appreciate the patience with my vocabulary
December 7, 200421 yr Author Newbies Sorry for wasting your guys' time, I don't think I can figure this one out. I thought I could figure it out, but I'm not smart enough thanks though
December 7, 200421 yr Hi Andrew, Hogwash, if I can figure this crap out, then anyone can. Post a copy of your files and I'll see what I can do to help you figure it out. Lee
