Pop up lists

Can someone explain this to me.

I have many solutions that utilize pop up lists. Sometimes when I click on a value from that list it automatically tabs to the next field and sometimes it just enters the value and stays in the field. How can I control which it will do?

Do the same lists perform the same way consistently? If the only field on the layout is the one formatted as a list, then this is to be expected. If it isn't, what are the differences in the Tab order, etc. between layouts?
