Unable to share a FMP7 database. How can I fix this?

Check that you have multi-user mode for that file selected.

I don't see the multi-user mode that you speak of. Where would I find it in FMP 7? I have network sharing on and network access to file is set to all users.

also, the DB sits on a server.

I have network sharing on and network access to file is set to all users.

Is it the same way you share say a word document??? Thats wrong it's not the sharing needed here - It's the thing from first dropdown from left menu where "sharing" is mentioned and the subselection "Filemaker Network" is posible.

First you should turn off file sharing. Accessing a FileMaker database via file sharing is the best way to demolish your data.

Next, open the files via FMP7 on the machine where they are located. Under the FileMaker menu, select Sharing-->FileMaker Network, and turn networking on. Now your networked FMP users should be able to find the files if they use Open Remote...

Turn off file sharing under system preferences? Why would I want to do this? and Why does the file need to be open from the host machine? That was never the case in previous versions of FM.

This has always been the case. Sure, you CAN access a filemaker database on a remote machine via OS-level file sharing; by doing that, however, you are endangering your data if you do so. If multiple users access the same file at the same time this way, you are asking for trouble, in the form of data loss and corruption.

Opening the file in FMP on the host machine, and having remote users access the databases via FileMaker's built-in sharing mechanism is the recommended method. To ensure that users go this way, you turn off file-sharing.

It works great between two Macs. But for many reasons, we have had our DB files on a PC server and would like to continue to do so. It isn't working between having the file on the PC and opening it remotely from a Mac.

It should work fine no matter what platforms you're using. When you say "opening it remotely" from a Mac, do you mean via FMP's "Open Remote" or via the OS? If you're using "Open Remote" (which you should be doing) and it isn't working, there would be a problem with the network settings on one of the machines involved.

I've got clients on FMP 5, 6 and 7 with PC servers & Mac clients, Mac servers & PC clients, and every possible combination. All of them work fine if they're configured properly.
