Newbies speed Posted January 10, 2005 Newbies Posted January 10, 2005 Looking for a method to make a fm 7 database run off a cd, basically it should only run off the cd. any idea how i could do this. opinions are welcome [email protected]
andygaunt Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 Hi - If you want to add data, then you cannot have the database run on the cd, it must be installed onto the computer. If it is just for viewing then you should not have any problems.
transpower Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 I suppose you could use a CD RW, with something like Nero CD-RW. But I haven't tried it, and even if it worked it would be very slow compared with an HD.
Oldfogey Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 I have written a very basic runtime solution for a customer and it runs off a CD. It is just to generate a date-sensitive password for my customer, who travels among his franchisees. I think you always get a message saying it's going to open as read-only. As alredy pointed out you cannot update anything.
Newbies speed Posted January 12, 2005 Author Newbies Posted January 12, 2005 Yeah the data is simply for viewing, it would be nice to know how you went about creating your cd runtime
DykstrL Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Look at this thread: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=139962&an=0&page=0#139962 It shows a script to test whether a file is 'locked' - it might give you some ideas.
Oldfogey Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 speed, I just create a runtime on a hard drive, burn the runtime folder to a CD and then add an autorun to start the main executable. Re the autorun, I got mine for nothing as an add-on with Tarma Installer. The Tarma autorun, for some reason, avoids the read-only problem - no message. Let me know if more details required.
lobonacci Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 I hope this is an o.k. forum to ask my question on. I created a Runtime solution but it does not work on any other computer. Must it have an autorun program attached to it or something else? It is a small file (less than 1 Megabyte), so I thought it could run just by dragging it off a zip disc. Is there an installation procedure I have to follow? Thanks for any input. Ideally, I would put it on a memory stick (like a dongle) and have it run off of that. Is that possible? Carlo
Oldfogey Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Carlo, Prior to V7 a runtime would be around 10Mb. In V7, a runtime starts at around 20Mb. So I'm not sure what you mean by a "small file(less then 1 Megabyte)"? It sounds to me as though you haven't really created a runtime. A proper runtime should run on almost any other computer. FMP says V7 runtimes will only run on W2K and XP (or OS-X) but some people have run them successfully on earlier Windoze versions. You should be able to run a runtime off a memory stick.
