You should be able to, have a look in the FMP help file at: Text Formatting Functions

No, unfortunately you can't. There are a bunch of earlier threads about this subject.

What you can do is placing a container field below the other field and then script the insertion of a colored picture into that field.

As David pointed out, there are some workarounds for version 6 and prior, however what you are referring to was only added in version 7.
