I need more than 20 tab limit in any text item

I have design a layout in which I need about 70 tabs in a few text items such as four fields and two text labels populated with field <<info>>. I have entered the tabs' settings every 25 pixels up to 500 pix and no more new tab...

I need them but I do not know how to overcome that issue. Is there a workaround with other program -Which one?- and the pasted text manteins the format?

Any idea?

Interesting... I have never used tabs in fields in layouts. There are other more reliable ways of displaying and formatting data.

What is it you are trying to do?

Hi Vaughan,

I have got few weeks ago a very interesting file -sort of room booking schema- from other forum here in FMForums. Sorry about the link but I am in another mac and I can not reach the exact data. I vaguely remenber that Cobaltsky could be the author (sorry if not).

Talking about the issue, the few fields, relationships and value lists involved, were beautifully designed. The result was a list of rooms and the booked data marked. Sort of gantt graphic. The file simulated with the char pipe | the graph and inserted the tab char to mark the sequence. Furthermore, with an ingenious arrangement by putting four fields one above the other the author get a elegant simulation of graphic appaerance. But was largely too big for my purpouses.

The point for me was to reduce the |||||||||||||||| of each to half and, if possible to control the tabulation. Set every 25 pix seemed to be suitable for my needs... but the joy finished when I reach the 500 pix or 20th tab. No more.

If there is not any workaround (commented in my original post) I am considering two ways:

- Pass the calcs to a nonproportional font, changing the tab character in the cal with spaces

- Make the graphhic part with container field (w/ 80 repetitions)

But I really like the first approach.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I have made a few tests in order to explore further the issue comented.

The automatic tabulation space seems to be 35 pixels. In this case, not controllable by user, seems to have no limitation.

I have pasted tabulated text in word 25 pix wide to the layout and, as expected, filemaker flawlessly shows the first 20 tabulations and in the 21th loses it, going to the standard/automatic tab of 35.

Any ideas?

Or simply, ask it for the next version smirk.gif

Thanks

Just to solve the puzzle.

I have tested the issue with the old Monaco, non proportional font, and seems to work properly. No tab character, then no solution for that.
