New_2_FM Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Hello, I am doing a filemaker pro 3.0 to pro 7.0 conversion project. I would need to create a runtime solution for this project. I have many end users and the project is business critical. I would need to create a runtime solution and distribute it to all the end users. Once I finish that, I could do the conversion with the latest data in the files. Does it plan sound good to you guys? Thanks, Jackson
SteveB Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 You may have a problem. You won't be able to transfer data from v6 or earlier runtimes into a v7 runtime. If you can get the data out into a .csv or .mer files, then you're okay. Steve
New_2_FM Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 I will not be importing data from verson 6 to version 7 runtime solution. What I want to do is to do the conversion, create a runtime solution based on those converted files and distribute the runtime solution to the end users. Distribution of the runtime solution might take up to 2 weeks. After all users have the runtime solution, I will convert all the files with its data one last time and place them to the filemaker server. I am just not sure if the runtime solution (created two weeks ago) will be able to connect to the files on the server. That is my question. thank you. Jackson
Vaughan Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 No, runtimes are single-user non-network. Runtime cannot access server.Runtime can onlny open the "bound" files. You'll need to give each user a copy of FMP client, or let them access the database through the web interface.
Lee Smith Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 To add to what Vaughan just said. I think you are confused, FileMaker removed the ability to share Runtimes as you described since it came out with v4. That is why they have all of these products now, (i.e. Server, Unlimited, etc.) Lee
New_2_FM Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 So Filemaker removed the ability to share Runtimes. Can you refer me to any documentation about this single-user non-network runtimes? I might need to re-evaluate my project. Thank you. Jackson
Lee Smith Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Other than going back to the Product release of version 4, or to the Technical Articles at FMI, I really don't have any documentations. Do a search of "ALL Forums" using the Keywords of +Runtimes and +multiuser and you should pull up an abundance of reading material on this problem - be sure to remove the 1 in the Weeks. HTH Lee
Vaughan Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 "So Filemaker removed the ability to share Runtimes." That's not what I said. I said that runtimes cannot access server-hosted file, or open any other FMP files that aren't bound to the runtime. FileMaker Inc aren't stupid: FM Server can host and share runtime files! But each user will need a copy of FMP client to open the hosted files.
Lee Smith Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Hi vaughan, I think jackson was paraphrasing me, not you. And he got my point loud and clear. As you have pointed out, there are ways to use the Runtime, just not as a free FileMaker seat. What was free in v3, you now have to pay for. FileMaker just "Plug a hole", where they saw a loss of potential revenue with the release of v4. Businesses can be so cruel that way. Lee
New_2_FM Posted May 9, 2005 Author Posted May 9, 2005 Before I was confused what Runtime Solution can do. After I read more, now I understand runtime solution better. Its purpose is for user who does not have filemaker pro software, but still wants to use the FileMaker application. In that case, application developer compile the application into a Runtime Solution, which is an executable file. The end user can execute the Runtime Solution in his/her computer without FileMaker Pro software installation.
