Question...

I have never saved out a runtime solution. If I save out my solution in OSX using developer, is the final runtime solution a MAC only version? If so, why is there a FM promt when saving out the solution that talks about the 3 letter extension, and using .USR for windows users?

Do I have to find a PC, install developer, and then save out my solution on the PC in order to get a PC version of my solution?

When you create a runtime version, that particular runtime will only work with the OS you created it on. My understanding is that the individual files can be opened on any platform, if they are opened with FMP, Developer, or Server, but not with the runtime application.

If you want to create a runtime version for PC, you would have to build it on a PC.

Larry -

This is the time you want to know someone close with a PC and Developer.

As Brent states the Runtime is created on the specific platform (although I think it is better to state you would need to bind it on the PC, not build). However, if you are thinking of going cross platform it is extremely advisable to have a PC lying around for any cross platform issues.

Once you create the runtime you generate the Runtime application which uses your database files and creates runtime versions.

If you use the same binding key on both platforms, you can then continue your development on a single platform. The runtime database files will then be avaialbe to each platform after the initial binding (as long as you keep the same binding key for future builds) and store the runtime application from the PC in a safe place (all those lovely DLL's!!!)

Bind - Build - Compile - all of these terms are driving me MAD!

Anyway -

If cross-platform is your goal, then I would suggest purchasing a PC if for no other reason than this. They are so inexpensive nowadays, you could purchase a new no-frills one for under $400. You could even buy a used one for even less.

The FMD CD that you bought should already have both PC & MAC versions on it.

The only thing that might be different in the program is any printing, importing, and exporting things. From my understanding, saved print setups (in scripts) will have to be written on each platform. This is my knowledge of FM6, 7 might be different.
