Calculation - adding fields fails to deliver

Featured Replies

Greetings

My calculations do not work. I want to add price from each record in an invoice

In Specify Calculations I do the Field1+Field2 etc & draw a blank.

The Fields I want to add are look-up Number fields derived from a related file.

I seem to be able to get this work on a dummy run, but not on the real thing.

Thanks in anticipation

Something is wrong with this picture. "Fields" are not "Records" ("I want to add a price from each record in an invoice"). To add the same field from multiple records, use a summary field. Any calculation of the form "Field1 + Field2 etc" will sum multiple fields in the SAME record, but not mulitple records.

Thanks - I probably explained my predicament incorrectly.

The way I have my invoice set up is to copy ID Number field from stock field, which puts in the rest of the details, including prices. I have ID No 1, ID No 2, ID No 3 & ID No 4 fields - (don't ask me why - the only answer I can give you is that after 2 months of working on FMPro, this is the only method I can get to work) & it would work fine if only the price fields would add up - I have them calculated to do so, Price_1 + price_2 + price3 + price 4 but they are failing to do so. The Postage cost added to the sub-total does actually work - I get the postage costs in the total, as the sub-total is blank. I am a bookdealer, with approx 14000 books catalogued - I did try a portal but it does not do what I require it to do

Many thanks for your help

Sean,

while I believe you can work out the FM for 95% of your design, hire someone who will design the first 5% of relation design for you. That way you will get good start and then you can just make your solution quite fast.

I did have someone doing it for me - he failed to show up at his last appointment with me & has been unavailable since, failing to answer the phone & having left me in limbo.

Part of the problem of creating a database is that I would have to write a specification or have someone beside me so that I can say exactly what I want the database to do

After many hours, I have finally worked out what the problem was

- I was relating the fields in my look-up to the fields directy through the source record / file, rather than through the Rationship file / title - if that makes any sense

- anyone want a more detailed explanation fell free to contact me -

Many thanks for your help
