2 q's: displaying a picture and linking to files

Featured Replies

Hey everybody,

I have two questions for the masters of filemaker...

1) Is there a way to insert a jpg, gif, etc. into a layout so that the picture itself shows instead of an icon that would open the picture in another file?

2) Right now i have a lot of powerpoint presentations stored in container fields throughout my db, which is making it grow a bit too large (up to 169 megs and going skyward). Is there a way to store the files on a host computer only to be downloaded to a user's computer when the user clicks on it, rather than have to store it inside the database itself?

all your thoughts/suggestions/help are greatly appreciated. Hope you're having a great friday.

You can use container fields to hold images such as JPGs etc. These container fields should show you the acutal image. Also, if you were putting the image diretly on the layout rather than using a container field, a simple Insert Picture would Insert the image into the layout.

For your second question, when inserting a file (both via script and manual entry), there is a check box that will allow only the file reference to be saved. In other words, it will create a path reference rather than storing the whole thing within the application.

Hope this answers your questions.
