May 16, 200520 yr I have a checkbox that displays values from a related table. How do I sort those values within that checkbox? Thanks.
May 16, 200520 yr Value lists based on field entries (and related fields) are always sorted alphabetically. The sort order of the value list cannot be changed. Custom value lists appear in the order they are typed.
May 16, 200520 yr "The sort order of the value list cannot be changed." Actually you can sort a value list by an alternate field for VLs based upon field data by including 'Also Display Values from Second Field' and specifying sorting on the second field. This second field can be a regular field within the same table such as Contact Type or even a calculation (you create just for this purpose) such as Get(RecordID) or any other criteria as long as it can be indexed. It can even drawn from a related field. Your checkbox will change it's display contents accordingly. By combining the ability of 'Include Only Related Values From', you can produce unique multiple lists sorted just about any way you wish. New in vs. 7, regular sorts can now also be sorted in custom order based upon value lists.
May 16, 200520 yr Moonshadow: you are correct there, value lsts can be soretd on a second field. "New in vs. 7, regular sorts can now also be sorted in custom order based upon value lists." Hmmm, don't know about it being new in 7... the Sort dialog in FMP 5.5 allows "custom sort based on a vlaue list" and I think it goes back to at least FMP 4 too, maybe earlier. Unless you mean something different from "regaular sort" than I do... a "kinky" sort?
May 16, 200520 yr Hi there Vaughan!! Sure enough - I just checked! It's the 'Reorder based upon summary field' that's new. I never used custom sort of vl in vs. 6 and was quite tickled when I magically found it in vs. 7. Whether new or not (and it's not), it's certainly a kinky feature. I'm finding it harder and harder to remember what's even IN vs. 6; I hadn't used FM very long before 7 appeared. Thanks for the catch!
