Inky Phil Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Hello everyone I am still feeling my way around 7 so be gentle with me. In FM5 I set up a constant by having a calc field set to 1 in each side of my relationship. I am obviously missing something in 7 cos when I have the same calc fields my relationship doesn't work ie I cannot display related data using the constant relationship. If however I change the match fields to simple fields (not calcs) with a 1 in each of them, hey presto, my relationship works fine. Can anyone guide me as to what I am missing or doing wrong TIA Phil
MoonShadow Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Phil, you no longer need a constant on both sides to produce an 'all' join (although I use constants on one side at times for other things). You can use a Cartesian join which is represented by an 'X' symbol in the relationships dialog. This allows all records in one table to be related to all records in another. Join any two fields except (I think) containers and it will work. If relating a 1 calc to a 1 calc isn't working, it's probably because you have one calculation (in the related side) set to be unstored.
Inky Phil Posted May 16, 2005 Author Posted May 16, 2005 Wow Shadow that was a quick reply, thank you very much. I wish I had asked sooner now. I have been trying to bottom that one for about 2 hours now. If it is not too much trouble just one more thing. If a cartesian join joins all to all can you use any two fields as the match fields then - even if they don't match? Phil
MoonShadow Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 You can join LastName to City if you wish. That's the beauty of it. I confess ... every time I drag a line and 'misplace it' - joining two non-matching fields, it makes me grin like a fool.
Inky Phil Posted May 16, 2005 Author Posted May 16, 2005 MoonShadow Not only did you put me right on my calcs (you were right about the storage) but taught me about cartesian joins at the same time - Brilliant!! Thank you so much. Phil
