Repeating Fields Tips and Tricks

Featured Replies

Does anyone know a good source for tricks with repeating fields? I bought this book called "File Maker Pro 5.0 Bible", but it's not very good when it comes to advanced stuff, and is especially vague on repeating fields topic. I'm sure the resources are out there, just don't know where to look.

Thanks much

Scriptology has a couple of tricks, but repeating fields are just plain difficult to use unless it's for something very simple. Filemaker could have done a lot to make them easier to use.

That's been my general impression, and I've been trying to avoid using them for this very reason. Nontheless, I want to understand as well possible how they work, and the kind of stuff one can accomplish using them, like pasting different colors into each repitition, etc.

Thanks for the advise.

Repeating fields are a hold over from the FM 2.1 and before days. They were really made obsolete by relational FM. Over and over again we see people insisting on using them, then returning to the forum to ask how to generate reports with information from repeating fields (an almost impossible task).

The best design approach is to push ahead and learn about the relational features of FM so that you won't be tempted to use repeating fields instead of a related file.
