dnowlan Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 I am a Mac User, and where I work we are considering moving to filemaker solutions. Right now we only need to use the Instant Web Publishing in the standard PRO. What I am not sure of is whether to host the database on Mac or Windows. I am a long time mac junky, but the place here is mostly windows. I am not looking for a platform war, but any information concerning the stability and Pros and Cons with the Windows version of publishing. Thank you!
Reed Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 If you're ever going to move to server advanced, I would feel better about hosting on a mac, since you can use Apache instead of IIS for your web server. If you're only using FMP, the web server is built in to FMP. The other reason I like macs for hosting is because I'm more familiar with the administrative tools and remote login capabilities on OS X compared with windows.
MoonShadow Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 The PC environment is probably less expensive to establish but costs more in staff hours with problem-solving and trouble-shooting.
Wim Decorte Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 The PC environment is probably less expensive to establish but costs more in staff hours with problem-solving and trouble-shooting. That would depend entirely on the skill set of the person/people who do the admin tasks. Bottom line: choose the platform that whoever has to administer it is most comfortable with. Otherwise you'll create frustration and extra costs.
stanley Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 All of the systems I design are served from the Mac, even where the client computers are mostly Windows boxes; I would say if you are comfortable on the Mac, and if you're the one who will be doing the administration, then stick with the Mac. -Stanley
pigslow Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I host now on a WIN 2003 server but I have hosted other filemaker solutions on WIN 2000 server, NT server, OSX server and way back on Mac OS version 7. To be honest with you I never had a problem on any of the platforms. I have always had clients of both flavors accessing my solutions no mater what. Go with what you feel comfortable.
