ok this is my deal, i'm 17 and have been working at a company that designs and manufactures roofs for subdivisions in the Virginia, DC, and Maryland area for a year now. i used to be a designer but due to school i didn't get to work to much, i am graduated now and workin here full time and going to college, and i thought i was going to do more desgining but...about 2 1/2 weeks ago my boss came to me with FMpro 5 and a manual. i had to create a data base to track shop workers hours, it took me those 2 1/2 weeks to get the program and make the amazing data base that i have, but i can't publish it on the web. i used the manual, didn't work, i looked on the FM website for help didn't work, and now i come to you who ever reads this and decideds to help, the main problem:

OK -

First thing is check your web companion settings.

Go to the Application Preferences under the Edit meu and ensure the Web Companion Plugin is turned on.

Then check the File Sharing options under the File menu. Make sure the Web Companion is checked. This will allow you to publish your database to the web.

Now check your web browser (you can just type in localhost to pull up the site). If this does not work you may have to change your port for web publishing from 80 to 591 in the application preferences.

Howdy, v! In addition to Andy's instructions above, you should also know the limitations of FM5 web publishing from a standard "client" version of FileMaker and you should probably tell us a little about your network.

FM 5 client allows you to web publish to (I think) 10 IP addresses in a rolling 12-hour period. It was designed to work on a small group basis and not publish to the public. At the time, FM offered an "Unlimited" version for internet web publishing. You could use Instant Web Publishing (IWP) or Custom Web Publishing (CWP), the former being the 'built-in' way and the latter being a 'design your own web pages' way that allowed you to stick FM data on pages you create yourself.

Accessing your web-published FM data also depends on your network configuration and whether or not you want to access your data from another terminal on the same network or through the internet from home or remote locations.

Sorry to hear you were 'thrown' into the world of FileMaker, but I think you'll find yourself glad you were and further glad it was not another, less-friendly database system. You may find yourself using FM for all kinds of stuff now, and for years to come.
