I am on my first major project with Filemaker. I am working with value lists in drop down boxes but when I am creating the list it comes up blank even though I know that the information is in there. What am I doing wrong?

I have three databases;

Deparments which have many catagories which have many sub catagories. When I create a catagory I have a drop down list of departments. When I create a sub catagory I have a drop down list of departments and catagories.

On my sub-department list the departments list is OK but the catagories list is blank. I am using the value list from another file option for departments and I am using the only related data option for catagories.

I know that the info is there but can not figure out why I can't see it. I feel that I should know but just can not see why.

Mark,

You may not be telling the particular field in the layout that it's supposed to be a drod-down list. Do this in Layout mode by selecting the field then going to Format Menu and then Field Format. In the dialog box which appears you may choose the type of field you wish to appear.

If you already know this and I missed the mark I appologize in advance.

Look carefully at your relationship definitions.

Incidentally, if you are using "other file" and then use a value list in the other file that is declared as being the subject of a relationship you won't get the list !. Bear in mind that the subject data of a relationship must be indexed (may be a clue here !)

You need to make a direct relationship to the related file referenced by the value list in the "other file".

Mark,

I've emailed you a couple of files. You might want to check out the "Multiple Dynamic Value List" post by Terrence Brown in the Value Lists section of the forum as well.
