count total of item by number by customer

I am trying to develop a layout that will show items purchased by a customer without showing multiple items on the report.

Example:

I have 10 customers who have bought thousands of items. I search for customer X, and the list mode shows he has bought Y Y Z B B B J J J items

Instead, I want to show:

customer name

2 Y

1 z

3 B

3 J

Am I making sense?

Basically I want it to count up how many of each item he has purchased across literally thousands of records, hundreds of customers and 917 items.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched and searched. It's midnight, and my eyes are glazed over :(

Hi idcmktng,

You need a columnar list/report layout with grouped data including subtotals and grand totals. FM will walk you through it.

Specify Fields: Put the fields you want to display or total in the report. Customer first, then Product and Quantity purchased.

Organize: Select Customer first (this will be your first break point). Notice as you move Customer to the right payne the rightmost diagram shows you it will be the first group. Then select your Product and move it also. See how it creates a sub-group?

Sort Records: By Customer then by Product.

Specify Summary of Quantity, make selections for theme and header/footer. Let FM create the script for you. This will include going to that layout, SORTING by Customer/Product and previewing. If not sorted properly, it won't work.

Then view it in Layout Mode. You can then place your summary quantity field in both leading parts and delete the body. You will want to add a Find (or GTRR) to the beginning of the script and you're in business. :(

You will end up with report (when sorted properly and previewed) as:

Customer 1 name (first leading part)

Product Y with sum of quantity (2) (second leading part)

Product Z with sum of quantity (1)

Product B with sum of quantity (3)

Customer 2 name

Product Z with sum of quantity (18)

.... etc.
