Losing changes when saving the file

Featured Replies

I am developing an application and have been losing changes to layouts and scripts. So, I've been using the 'Save A Copy As...' command to save the file in a backup folder every time I finish some major changes. The strange thing that happend today was I saved a copy at 11AM and closed the main file at 12noon and only the 11AM copy had the most recent changes.

My theory is that closing the main file at 12noon did not actually save the changes, and the changes were lost.

Here are some more details about my setup: Filemaker Developer 7 is installed on my machine. The files I work with live on a server, and I save them back to the server.

Any thoughts, help, much appreciated!!!!

Are the files hosted with filemaker server? If they are, then you can't use Save A Copy As on those files when opened with a FMP or FMD client.

FMP used to issue a warning about opening files on remote volumes, probably for good reason. Work with the file locally and then save your work back to the server using OS level functions is the best way. At least this way you simplify matters.

If you must work with remote files then make sure the permissions are ok, and make sure you've updated FMD and OS accordingly.

sandrotter,

what you're describing is not possible, so:

1. if you can make it happen again, you are on to a major bug

2. whenever data entered, or changes, appear to be "lost", it often is due to duplicate source files, with the same name. You may have been working from the wrong one.

3. working from files on a remote disk is OK, just a little sluggish. It should still work

4. there is an interesting related thread here http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/166043/tp/1/ "Save changes to disk during idle time". It appears that FileMaker may not "write to disk" as often as it should, and changes may be lost.

Thanks for your comments and ideas.

Ok, so it happened again today. To clarify, I do not have Filemaker Server, just Filemaker Developer 7 and I am on MacOSX Tiger. My computer has Filemaker Developer installed and the files themselves are on a file server on our network.

Last night I backed up all of the files in a backup folder (thank goodness). This morning or sometime during the night we had a file server crash and when the server was restarted I opened the file and the data from yesterday was missing. I have the file set to save during idle time.

However the backup that I made last night has the data from yesterday even though the file has an earlier save date and time.

I am completely certain that there are no bad file references and I am working in the right versions of the files. It really seems that for some reason the data is not getting saved to the server in cases when the server crashes even if it happens hours after the last change. I am going to move the operating file to my computer to see if it helps.
