September 23, 200520 yr Hello all, I'm no doubt doing something stupid, but i can't seem to enter data into a field in my database. In the attached database, is a layout called 'Factory'. This layout has a field to add a new factory. (This data gets added to other layouts, via a dropdown field - called 'Factory' - and such creates a list of factories for the user to choose from). When i go to create a new record, and start typing - it will not let me. Any advice would be most appreicated. Kindest Regards, Shane contact: shane [email protected] progress.zip
September 23, 200520 yr goto layout setup in your factories layout and change it to show records from member ship history...
September 23, 200520 yr Author Hi, Thanks for your help (again...) I'm sure that it's showing from 'Membership History' already.... Is there something stupid that i'm not seeing...? Many thanks, Shane. progress.zip
September 23, 200520 yr Author Ahhh... problem solved. Sorry - was changing the wrong settings. Many thanks for your help. Regards Shane.
September 23, 200520 yr Author Arrggh!! Still having problems. When i amend/add a member to the database - after i've selected a factory from the dropdown menu (main layout), it appears as a record within the 'factory' field on the Factory layout. I can sort of understand why this is happening - but how can i get around the problem. Using a design/layout similar to what i have - i would ideally like it so that when i add/amend a member, the factory records aren't messed up but at the same time if i add/amend a factory via the factory layout - i don't want the dropdown menu on my main layout to be messed up. Any ideas how to resolve this/achieve this..? I've attached the latest copy of the database - this shows the messed up dropdown menu (main layouts) and factory field (factory layout). Thanks for your time. Kindest Regards, Shane. contact: [email protected] progress_Copy.zip
September 23, 200520 yr You could change your design. You need more than one table in your database. Regards, Bogdan
September 23, 200520 yr Hi again, Do not forget a layout points - (show records from) to the table occurrence not the actual table. This is one of the key features of FileMaker 7. Regards, Bogdan
September 23, 200520 yr Author Hi, Thanks for your replies. I'll look into what you mentioned in your 2nd reply. Any suggestions in regards to your 1st reply. Help would be most appreicated. Kindest Regards, Shane contact: [email protected]
September 23, 200520 yr I have only glanced at your file, but it is apparent that you need (at least) a membership table, a factory table, and probably a join table between the two.
September 23, 200520 yr Shane, to save yourself any more grief and eventually time and pain when your fixing your database later... i suggest you take a look at a basic tutorial or some such... when i started out i had similar problems... I suggest you take a look at what linda has to offer: http://www.lynda.com/store/ProductInfo.aspx?productID=304 Trust me, after watching about 8 hours of a guy clicking around with a mouse using all the features of filemaker, it should all make sense... plus its quicker and less boring than reading a book... although a book is useful for quick reference later... September 26, 200520 yr Author Many thanks for your replies. I'll try and grab a tutorial asap... i'm just in a catch 22 situation at the moment. Got 2 days to come up with somnething that works - but need time to check tutorials to know how to do things... :-( I've changed some details of the database, so i'm gonna post again with updated info - rather than have people have to read all of this post. Regards, Shane.
