Multiple File Relationships

Featured Replies

Hello,

I created a separate database that lists job information. It has a General Industry field, a Sub Industry field and a job title field. I use this to create value lists which change according to the previous value. So if you choose Music as your general industry, the sub industry only shows the sub industries for music, etc.

When I use it in a relationship as a separate file, it works but inconsistently and sometimes doesn't show the right values, or shows more than the right values. Frankly it just goes wonky.

When I import the data into the main database and have the data internal it works fine.

Any ideas?

Additionally, if I have two databases that rely on this information and need to access it in order to create this value lists is there a way both databases can reference the file?

One database is stored on one computer and one on another an people remote to each. I placed the file on our server so that both could access it, but it doesn't allow the file to be accessed by more than one person at a time.

Previously with FM6 we just stored our main database on the server and everyone accessed it and updated it from there without any issues regarding having more than one person accessing it.

Is this different with FM7?

Thanks again!

Hi Calantha,

What do you mean by "When I use it in a relationship as a separate file"?

It should work in the same way as your FM6 file did. Stop hosting the file on the server, try making the files set to single user then set to multiuser and start horsting the file.

If I were to host a file that needs to be referenced by another file on another person's computer, every time they open the file that references it, they would also have to open the other file, would they not?

When I was hosting the file they value lists didn't show up for them...

Oh and what I meant was not an internal relationship.

Yes, the file referenced needs to be open.

Is it the value list which is not showing up or if the file itself can not be accessed by more than one user?
