global fields on layout?

when you have a script that uses global fields...do you have to put the global feilds on the layout or can you just define it and never place it anywhere?

Once a global field is created, it does not have to be on the layout. You can set the values from any layout. However, it is good practice as a developer to have a 'work' layout where you can see all your fields in a table.
