I am writing a database where sales people on the road will be able to sign in via terminal services and enter a sales order. Is there a way that after a sales order is created that FMP can be scripted to send a "canned" e-mail message (Preferrably containing Order number)to customer service notifying them that a new sales order has been entered?

Any ideas, thank you,

Steve

Steve,

The answer is yes and no.

In a nutshell, you can write a script that will populate an email message with all of the information that you desire but it will try to use whatever email client software is installed on the Terminal Server box. For Windows users this is frequently Outlook or Outlook Express. The user will have to click a button or two to allow FileMaker to take contol the emailing program.

If you want a more automated system then you should consider one of the SMTP plug-ins for FileMaker. When done properly the SMTP plug-in can be programmed to work seamlessly and transparently with FileMaker to compose and send the message without the user's knowledge.

You know...

After re-reading your post it could be that your TS box will not have an email client at all. If this is true then you will need the SMTP plug-in for sure.

If you could provide more information about your general setup it would be helpful.

The Terminal Server side has not been completely set up yet. So based on what you are saying then the SMTP Plug in would be needed. Would this plug in also have to be installed on each users local FMP License? Or sincer server 8 will be host the databases does it only need to be on the associated DB's at the server level?

Thanks for your help,

Steve
