I have discovered a world of messy files I did not know exist - both on FM Server 7 and my own computer (in My Computer > Manage). They are Event Viewer, Error logs and such. On my own computer, there are thousands and, already in FM Server, the list is quite long. I recall that, when installing Server, it asked how often to write events (I believe that was the wording) and I didn't mess with it because I didn't know the answer.

Are these like temp files that can be deleted safely? I assume I'll want to keep the Server events for a certain period of time in case I need to track a problem but for how long? Can Scheduler (or even Server itself) be configured to periodically delete older entries only so they never get too large?

Hi L.,

FMS can be configured to collecte stats. You can set how big the file can get and how often FMS collects those. They're very useful for troubleshooting so you probably should save them from time to time so you can always go back and compare when something weird starts to happen.

As to the event logs/event viewer: don't mess with that, they are your best friend. FMS does log a ton of information there, most of it "information" but also "errors" and "warnings". Go to the downloads section of my website and download the "FMS_eventsLog" file there. It's a FM8 file completely open that queries that event log and returns all errors and warnings that have to do with FMS. It also uses all the information entries to compile usage stats: who was in what file when and for how long.

All that logged info may seem untidy, but it has invaluable info in it. if you delete it or neglect it, some day you'll wish you had it :

Thanks guys! So events are my friend; not messy at all!

And now FMS_eventLogs will give me eyes (and power) as well. Thank you so much, Wim!! :laugh2:
