I want to create the tools for the user to construct his own mail templates. So here is the deal: I would have a layout with a large main text field on the right side of the page, and on the left side I want to have common pieces of text and relevant fields (tags) that the user can insert into the main text with the click of a button next to the tag. The button(s) will trigger a scripts that will insert the text (or field) where the cursor is in the main text.

Here is the problem: Normally I would create a mail template and blend texts and fields in layout mode using merge fields. How do I do that in browse mode?. In other words, I want the user to be able to insert a tag (or a group of tags) with the value of a field into the main text field in browse mode. Is this possible?

No answer... I would guess that means it can't be done.

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion:

Thank you for your example, but would you please care to expand on it some more, I am not really clear how is this used.

Why me? I wasn't even in that thread...

The idea is that the user inserts placeholders for fields into the Template field. What actually gets printed is a calculation field, where the placeholders are substituted by the actual fields' content.
