lamBRETTa Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I have a Filemaker Server running FM8. I use the admin tool to tap in from inside the network. PC to PC, but i want to be able to administer the Server from my Mac at home. I can access the d.bases through the FM8 application on my Mac at home, but the Admin tool will not connect. I have ports 5003 and 25003 open. Is there anything i am missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. **also, it is very very slow when opening files from a machine on the outside. Last time i set up a FM network (on Mac's) remote access outside the network was pretty quick. That was using Fm5.5 too! ANy ideas?)
Wim Decorte Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 You have to use VPN or Remote Desktop in this case. FMI disabled remote admin straight through a firewall/NAT router.
JerrySalem Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 You have to use VPN or Remote Desktop in this case. FMI disabled remote admin straight through a firewall/NAT router. Is this true!? Do you have a reference for this? Since upgrading to 8 I have not been able to get this to work and solved it using VPN indepentantly after alot of frustration. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time :D
Steven H. Blackwell Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Remote Admin thru a NAT firewall was disabled for FileMaker Server 7, and it remains disabled for FileMaker Server 8. IIRC, this is covered in both the Security Tech Brief and the Server Tech Brief. And, BTW, the Ports for the SAT Tool are 50003 and 50006, not 25003 as stated by the original poster. Steven
lamBRETTa Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Hmmm...I was on the phone with a FM Tech guy (from Filemaker even!) and they said that you CAN adminster outside of your network with the Admin tool. I opened all the ports, 5003, 50003, and 50006 (yes 25003 was a mistype) but still no go. I currently RDP in then VNC to the FM Server. Slow but effective. Will they ever go back to letting you use the Admin tool? Just curious.
Wim Decorte Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Well... you can, right? Just like you're doing. If you use a VPN you can skip the RDP-to-VNC. Then you can straight RDP/VNC to the target machine. VNC is always a lot slower than RDP, no way around that.

VPN to the network. Then you can administer remotely, provided of course, you enabled that option. Steven
