Slobey Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Hi, I have a question about script speed. When I run a script from a remote location, it seems to take a heck of a lot longer to run. Is this due filemaker, the host machine hardware, the remote machine hardware, or the remote connection (T1)? Thanks
gdurniak Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 All of the above. The script itself runs locally, but must talk back and forth to the server to get record info.
IdealData Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Whilst it's true that all those factors influence the script speed - the dominant one is your T1 connection. The fastest script speed is limited by the slowest network speed - the upload speed from the hosting point. Have you thought about Terminal Services or other types of remote connection technologies (VNC et al)?
Steven H. Blackwell Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Actually file architecture is the controlling factor. Granted that in 8.0v2 there has been a regression due to the unstored calculation flag issue; however that issue will be fixed in 8.0v3. In FileMaker Server 7 and FIleMaker Server 8, sparse bit mapping of records makes for much more robust WAN based performance. Sure, a T-1 is faster that a 128 K ADSL line, but server hardware, local cache amount, latency on the pipe, and file architecture are all contributors. Steven
