calculated field- overwrite or work-around

Featured Replies

I am having a hard time finding a solution to overwriting a calculated field. For the majority of records, summer salary + fall salary + winter salary + spring salary =Total salary… but there is a handful of records that don’t follow that rule and the “total salary” needs to be inputted manually.

Can you overwrite a calculated field?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

There is an option in the field definition dialog, which you can check off. When it is checked, it tells filemaker to not write over anything in the calculated field if there is something there.

so for example fall_salary and winter_salary = total_salary

then if a number is directly typed into the total_salary field, then even though it is a calculated field, any changes to the fall_salary or winter_salary will not result in the total_salary field being overwritten.

maybe this option might help?

hope so,

sincerely,

Another option would be to add another field to the calc. summer salary + fall salary + winter salary + spring salary + Typed_Salary =Total
