What is this relationship?

Featured Replies

This relationship was used (by Soren) in a sample file yesterday, but I have not been able to find any reference to its type or recommended uses in the FMP documentation. Can someone describe it?

It is what is known as a 'cartesian' join ie any record can match any record. Almost like a 'global' relationship

Phil

Sorry I have just realised that it does not have a mtch field on the left hand side - so now I am curious as well!

See here.

BTW, it's a 'Cartesian product' relationship (as opposed to other things Cartesian). But you won't the term in Filemaker's help.

It's perhaps important to caution, that undocumented features might disappear in future upgades - but there are hardly any need for the primary key as it is....

Ah - very interesting. Thank you both

Phil

True - but documented features are not guaranteed to survive either.

So this is simply the "x" relationship, but without the need to have "placeholder" ID on the left side?

Actually, the only way I was able to duplicate the relationship in the example was to define a dummy field, establish the relationship and then delete the field.

AN UPDATE: The post Comment referenced provides the answer.

I know of no other way either!
