August 28, 200619 yr Our IT folks are wanted detailed information on Filemaker security for our solution we are putting on the web. Is there points I can give them to show that Filemaker is a solid platform to use. We have FM 6.04 unlimited - Port 591 Apache 2 - Port 80 PHP 5 The FM databases are on a different machine running FM server 5.5. The databases have built in security and authorization to open them. We also run Web Security databases to lock down files to only the access we want. Any info or help would be appreciated and these IT people and just looking for a way to force us to switch to Oracle.
August 28, 200619 yr There are multiple security issues with these [color:red]outdated and no longer supported versions of the products. You should upgrade to the modern versions with their unified security model and true server based services. See: http://www.filemakersecurity.com as well as the Tech Briefs on Server, on Security, and on External Server Authetnication found at: http://www.filemaker.com/support/upgrade/techbriefs.html Steven
August 28, 200619 yr Author Steven, Absolutely agree on upgrading to newer versions for the reasons you state. But what I want to show the IT people is that Filemaker security is good.
August 29, 200619 yr But what I want to show the IT people is that Filemaker security is good. Then don't show them older versions. Steven
August 31, 200619 yr Hey Steven, I think our friend might just be looking for some amunition to take back to the IT guys that Filemaker is up for the challenge of today's web environment. With version 7, now 8.0 and recently 8.5, security and access are worlds more advanced that under previous versions. So much so that comparison is pointless. Have a look at what the filemaker website has to say about sharing data safely under the new security model. http://www.filemaker.com/solutions/share_data/index.html This should help you deal with the IT folks and justify the upgrade to the current version of filemaker products. BTW, version 6 does have some security issues and you would do better to upgrade before deploying. HTH Tim
August 31, 200619 yr I don't understand what you're saying here. The original poster wanted to use older versions. They are not secure. Modern versions are much more secure, although they are not perfect. Moreover the misuse of the security schema or efforts to create "additions" or "enhancements" to the security system by persons who do not udnerstand either security in general or the FileMaker system in particular, result in systems with the appearance of security but with greatly diminished security in fact. If he wants to show FileMaker security, he has to use the modern versions. Steven
September 5, 200619 yr Steven, I agree completely. But if he doesn't have the current software, he may need to make the case for purchase. Taking a look into the written information about the features and benefits of the current software can help make such a case. So, I am just saying that the current version can provide his security wishes and here is some information to support that purchase. Tim
