Is there a way to take the contents of a container image from several records and display them as a grid?

In the example above each square is a container from a seperate record based on the results of a search query. If the results were more than would fit on one screen then ideally you could scroll down until the last record was displayed. Then you couldd click on any individual square to navigate to the "related "record."

I have attached an image from an application that does this. The grid is dynamically generated based on the results of a search query of a total record population. In a "show all" mode you would have a grid that would theoretically display all the images from the individual records in a database. Similar to a simple to do list view, but in a grid. You can click on any square and it will open a record that looks alomost identical to a FMP or (dare I say it) Access form/record.

I have thought about this for years but don't know where to start and did not have the guts to ask the list!

Any ideas? Should this be in the left brain right brian forum?

Thanks,

Steve

In FileMaker 7 it became possible to start a portal at a certain row number. This lets you put a portal from one relationship across the layout as columns, each starting 1 up from the one on the left. That's the basic "grid". So, to show the found set, you need to populate a key on the "left" side of the relationship, to match the multiple IDs of the pictures.

There's more than 1 way to do this. You could go to a layout with only the IDs, then Copy All Records, then Paste into a global field. Or you could use a Custom Function which gathered the IDs of the found set, using GetNthRecord(). There are a couple of those around, some at:

The CF could do it automatically. But the Copy All Records/Paste might be faster.

A Go To Related Record step would go to the record of the picture. I should make an example file. I have some like this, but none that does exactly this.

The functions link at Briandunning.com is an amaizing resource. I did not know that it existed. Thank you,

Steve
