How do I add a serial number field to a layout and have it automatically put in the serial numbers?

Are you wanting to have it auto asign a number, then when a new record is added just get the next availabel number?

Yes that would be fine. I just can't seem to figure out how to get serial numbers started for my current records.

Create a number field with option serial number.

Place it on the layout.

In browse mode place cursor in the new field.

Records -> Replace ....

To help clarify a couple of points:

The field does not have to be a number field, and in fact in most cases you it will be text. The numbers can be alpha numeric such as CI_1001, AB1001, XYZ200, or simply 1

To set the field up, Go into Define Fields, Select (create) your Serial Field, and then click on the Options button. The Option Dialog box will appear, Select the Serial Number Option, and then click Okay.

Go In Browse Mode, and then:

Show all records:

Main Menu >> Records >> Show All Records (If it is grayed out, then then all records are showing)

Replace

Main Menu >> Format >> Records >> Replace Field Contents

The Replace Dialog box will appear, Click on the [color:blue]Replace Serial Number button, Enter your [color:blue]starting Number and then the Replace. The
