Value list good practice

Featured Replies

Hi

I've had a little search around but can't find a definitive answer to this one. Is it OK to set up a value list and receive entries to that list on the same field? It seems to work fine but just wanted to check that it was good practice. So when you click on the field you can either choose from the drop down list, or you can type in a new entry. When you move onto the next record the entry you just typed appears as an option.

Hope that makes sense,

Many thanks, Rosie

I've always looked at value lists as static options that tend not to change and therefore makes data entry easier and creates less data entry errors. If you set up a value list and allow continual upgrades and changes you are leaving the apllication open to user input and IMHO believe it defeats the purpose.

Again, that's just my opinion.

If you want the Typeahead feature, then [color:red] Select the field in [color:blue]Layout Mode, then Field [color:blue]Setup and the select the button that says [color:blue]Auto Complete using previously entered values.

It MIGHT be good practice, depending on what exactly it's used for. The danger is you'll end up with five different spellings of the same value.

Mm. Some things to think about there but it doesn't sound like I'm actually doing anything wrong at present. More of an input/accuracy choice.

Many thanks,

Rosie.
