What changes CAN you make to live files?

Featured Replies

What can I do to the file safely while the database is actually in use, i.e., people are adding/editing records in the database?

1 - Can I ADD/import new scripts?

2 - Can I create new layouts?

3 - Can I modify an existing layout if it's not being used?

4 - Can I modify a script if it's not being used?

Obviously I'm new at this... Is there anything else I should be asking?

Thanks for your input.

Wow.

Thanks.

It seems far more permissive than I was led to believe.

Thanks Mr V. I really appreciate it.

Be advised however that just because you can do something, does not mean that you should.

I make live modifications very often and am very careful not to alter the core scripted processes in my system. One example would be the setting of fields in new record creation, where an alteration could result in required fields not being set to their expected values. Another would be the addition of required fields during the same time a new record is being created, thereby placing the user in a non-committable loop(record cannot be saved and user cannot enter required value, because it is not yet on the layout).

Along with this freedom, comes the caution to use it carefully.

I think it is a great freedom to be able to modify the database live and plan to continue this behavior.

My 2cents,

Tim

Chuck,

This topic has come up before. It was a significant sidetrack to the initial focus of this thread:
