newb needs to know... FM5/6 Merging databases

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to do the following.

I have 6 .fm5 files that I want to merge into a single file. All files have the same fields and formatting structures etc.

If any other info is needed, just let me know

Thanks for any tips :D

I would duplicate one file and import the other 5 into the copy.

Hi Jim,

I don't disagree with comment's suggestions. However, I am currious as to why you would have 5 copies of the same database in use.

Before importing the data, is there a chance that these files have duplicate records? If so, would a record in one file be more current then the others? If yes, then you will want to plan how they are imported to protect the data. If not, then proceed as comment has suggested.

Hi Lee and Comment,

Thanks for the tips.

I asked myself the same question when I first got assigned to work on this database.... why are there so many?

What they do each month is create a new empty database to store the months invoices in (there are no duplicates). This is apparently for the accounting people, but I really don't understand why seperate databases were required. Anyway, the database is too complex to easily "change" now. Basically it will require a major revamp.

Going with comment's suggestion for this would be ok I think as there are no duplicates.

Thanks for all the help!

Cheers
