I have tried to Insert Object into a container field but can't get it to work. I am using XP-SP2

and FM 8.5 Advanced. I create the container field an then Insert Object, Create from File, file is C:test.doc, Select Display as Icon, select Icon, click OK. I do not get an Icon I only get the words "Microsoft Word Document" displayed in the container. If I double click on it it will open the correct document but only in Layout mode not in Browse mode. Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi

you had surely inserted the object into the container, but in LAYOUT MODE !

What appens if you double click the container in BROWSE mode ? Appears "record sound" ?

If so, go in layout mode and delete the inserted object; go in browse mode and insert the object

Hey Daniele,

Actually, I tested out this and what the OP stated is true. When you Insert Object you can choose to create from file and Display as Icon with the Icon that you can choose.

However, you will see that it only results the generic 'Microsoft Word Document' message.

Most people never really use 'Insert Object' to insert Word files; choosing to go with 'Insert File' instead, so I guess this doesnt come up that often.

Thanks for the response. In my case I need to insert only the link to the file so the user can click on it and open Word and modify the file as needed and then print a copy. The insert object from file is the only way I know to do this.

No, you can use Insert File. There is a checkbox to 'Store Only reference to the file' when the dialog box for selecting the file pops up.
