arnica Posted April 2, 2002 Posted April 2, 2002 I have FMP Unlimited on a user's computer. Web companion is enabled. When the user transfers from Netscape to FMP and back again the Computer freezes. Anyone got any answers. We have allocated lots of memory to FMP still with no avail. Jo Ann
IdealData Posted April 2, 2002 Posted April 2, 2002 How about 1. OS and version 2. Version for Netscape Personally I prefer IE5 (Mac) as I experienceed several problems with "nutscrape". Are you deploying the solution like this, or is this just in development.
arnica Posted April 2, 2002 Author Posted April 2, 2002 We are using OS 9.1x and Netscape 4.78 The program has been deployed already. I have utilized a "fix" solution bringing the WEB information to another computer then exporting to the computer where the user works. I do believe that much of the conflict lies in the computer being the daily use by the user and the WEB Companion simulated server. However, I have no such problem when I run the program on a PC, just on the MAC. Jo Ann
IdealData Posted April 2, 2002 Posted April 2, 2002 Bear in mind my comment about "nutscrape". Also, the Mac delivers more service to foreground apps - not the same on a PC - so when you switch to Netscape then FMP becomes a background process and gets starved of processor time, and vica versa I had more success with IE5, it's a lot more stable than "nutscrape"
Keith M. Davie Posted April 2, 2002 Posted April 2, 2002 "I have FMP Unlimited on a user's computer. Web companion is enabled. When the user transfers from Netscape to FMP and back again the Computer freezes." I host my site with FMPro 4.0 on a Mac so I don't know the answer for sure. That computer is dedicated. Browser choice is up to the client. Somehow I get the feeling that Unlimited should be on a dedicated computer not a user's computer. And you mention scripts. There could be problems there unrelated to the problem you have asked.
Keith M. Davie Posted April 3, 2002 Posted April 3, 2002 "Personally I prefer IE5 (Mac) as I experienceed several problems with "nutscrape"." It would seem to me to be obvious that NN is more demanding of syntatical things like closing your tags if you have opened them. Yes, IE has added (cumbersome) "features" which assume closing tags, etc., making it easier to be sloppy in one's syntax. Of course those "features" are also part of what makes IE lugubrious and a waste of my time. If your syntax is so poor that you cannot get html to work on NN, are you going to limit your customers or clients to IE? Are you willing to deny NN users access to your site? I know NN is my browser of choice and if a site will allow me a visit only if I use IE, then that site is not going to get my business. Yes, I do use IE as an occassional browser - when I don't want to accept cookies. And there are other browsers like Opera. What about them?
Garry Claridge Posted April 3, 2002 Posted April 3, 2002 Make sure that you are using the latest version of FMP (5.5v2). All the best. Garry
arnica Posted April 3, 2002 Author Posted April 3, 2002 I have 22 FMP WEB served databases, running on a PC Server. The problems only arose when we tried to run a database on a MAC. Netscape is the browser of choice at our company, so everything must be made for Netscape. For now, since deployment has already happened, I am working on transferring the WEB stuff to a PC Server. We do not have the luxury to continue to troubleshoot on the MAC. Unfortunately I was given this project due to the departure of the person who originally wrote it, so I am wadding through numerous scripts, links and bogus fields. Jo Ann
Garry Claridge Posted April 3, 2002 Posted April 3, 2002 Certainly MacOS 9.x will have problems with any of those 'multitasking' type activities. Mac OS X handles that type of thing exceptionally well. Of course your user would need all of their other applications OS X native before considering converting over. All the best. Garry
ibiubu Posted April 3, 2002 Posted April 3, 2002 Did you make sure you are using the latest update to web companion? I was also using FileMaker 5.5 on a Mac running OS9. It also kept locking up. As soon as I updated to the latest Web Companion...the thing has not crashed on me a single time. LR PS I too have had problems with Netscape on the Mac and FileMaker. The 2 just dont play nice. PC Netscape accessing a FileMaker database seems to run more smoothly. I know it is a problem, but you just may not be able to run Netscape and FileMaker on the same Mac at the same time. FileMaker and Explorer on the Mac at the same time...not a problem here. [ April 02, 2002, 01:00 PM: Message edited by: Larry Ross ]
