I have two layouts.

1st - Has a portal for rows 1-17

2nd - Has a portal for rows 18-50

1st also has a grand total field for rows 1-50.

The grand total works fine. But how do I get a subtotal on the 1st layout for rows 1-17 only?

This is a rather unorthodox request. Portals are display devices. Splitting a portal into two should be driven by layout considerations, not by data. It is still a single portal - therefore the subtotal is meaningless.

That said, you could do this by a custom function - but if you ever change your portal arrangement, you will need to modify the calculation to match.
