Hello,

I tried to search the forum for my answer but I can’t locate what I am after. Im sure the answer is simple but it has eluded me.

I have a database here at the office for victims of crimes…before I constructed the db they kept some data on Excel.

My question is this: when I import from the old Excel sheets into my DB how do I handle the primary keys?

Do I have to create a new field in the Excel sheets and auto generate or is there a way for FM to generate the keys when I do an import?

Thanks,

James

If it is simply going into one table and it is a sequential serial number field when you import FM will ask you to check "Perform autoenter options.

if the data is to a related field, I believe, you will need to enter the data into one of the excel cells. At least I've never been able to figure out how else to do it.

When you do the import James, there will be an option that pops up for Auto-entry. This will allow the serial keys to be gerneated automatically.

*Edit - Al got to it first. ;)
