Hierarchical Portals

I am working through Excelisys' Hierarchical Portals (http://www.excelisys.com/services/fmp7/tips_tricks.htm). The MainID is a vital part of the ParentPathID. However, when I read the accompanying white paper, I can't figure it out. Has anyone used this hierarchy before? Can anyone help me figure out how to append the MainID into the ParentPathID?
