publicly available ODBC data sources?? / Pubmed ??

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if there is a directory of publicly available ODBC data sources? this question came to mind because I was looking for a way to connect directly to PubMed and couldn't find any mention of a database server to connect to.

Is there a reason you want to (or have to) connect to pubmed via ODBC? You can connect through xml. I can post the xsl code if you haven't already found a solution that works for you.

Hi there,

I was just curious to learn about how to use the new ESS features with large, publicly available data sets. I'd love to have the XSL that will work with PubMed. Thanks :(-)

There was a post way back in March about this. It's gone now I think. But these are the xml/xsl files from that. There is also an AppleScript script with curl, to retrieve a request in xml format; so it's best opened on a Mac; but the xml/xsl are cross-platform. I don't remember much about that, as it was not my question; I just answered it :(-]

Here's my work in progress. The attachment includes:

-the xsl sheet (adapted Fenton's)

-the filemaker file that uses it

Please forgive any bugs. I'm kinna new at this, but the file a works for connecting to pubmed and keeping track of notes.

Hope it helps.

Have expanded on your XSL a bit. This will now convert an XML saved from a Pubmed search into a filemaker file with almost all the pubmed data being transferred into filemaker. Please check the blog entry for more details and to download the XML style sheet.

Am struggling with the same issue, at least figured out how to import pubmed data into filemaker from the xml file generated by pubmed ... hopefully will get the hang of creating a pubmed query in filemaker but for now if you need info on importing with an xml style sheet, please check the following link.

Hi abizar,

The blogspot url is down.  Could you attach your xsl file?

Thanks

Hi Quioto and welcome to the FMForums,

abizar hasn’t been back since March 2010, so I doubt that he or she will reply to your question. First of all, they are a newbies were actually look for an answer too. Secondly, it doesn’t surprise me that the link given is broken. In addition, they were also looking for help.

You would be better off in starting your own topic in  http://fmforums.com/forum/43-xmlxsl/ where you can give us a full description of what your needs are. This topic area is a sub-topic of Import and Export topic.
