Exporting to Excel- Everything in one row

Featured Replies

Hello- This is probably a basic question, but I can't find a solution.

When exporting data to Excel, it all exports great, but all the data exports to one really long row. I'm exporting about 200 fields and it would be great to have it all appear in one column instead of 1 row.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

What format are you using?

Read the Online Help about the different file formats;

With FileMaker open, Open FileMaker Help, and then search for [color:blue]Supported import/export file formats.

and [color:blue]Saving and sending records as an Excel file too.

Hello Thanks for the reply. I've read through all the help files, looked around the web and searched this forum.

I am exporting in excel format. The challenge is that FMP exports the data in one long row (2 if I choose to include field names).

Looking for a way to have it in column format. Its much easier to deal with 100s of fields in 1 long column than in 1 long excel row.

Thanks.

Maybe I'm not understanding your file structure, but try the different Formats. I would start with the Text ones, and depending on whether you want the field names or not, try the Merge Format, and it will open in Excel. If not, then choose Tab Separate Text, and it will open in excel.

Try both Save as Excel, and Export as Excel, they are not the same thing.

It's not a challenge, it's a convention: records are rows, fields are columns. You can re-arrange the data in Excel after importing (look for 'transpose' in the help).

You can also transpose during export, if you use XML export with a style sheet - but that is not a simple task.

Now I understand the file structure. Doh.
