Ok,

Been scratching my head for awhile on this. Simply have a portal that i want to simple show me the calls with the status of "Open"

I am serving this file, so my global fields arent retaining thier values...so what is another way to pull out this data?

Use a global field (stop serving, change field, and then reserve or set field with opening script) or global calc field to store the word "Open". The relationship for the portal should be keyed from this field to the status field of the child table.
