Newbie trying to link two seperate databases in layout

Featured Replies

Hi I have a membership database I am creating and I just downloaded a great calendar/to do list from this forum. I am trying to create a link on my main databases layout page that would open the to do list

Copying everything into a new table on my membership database seems to be the hard way.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dan

Are you trying to have both tables on one layout? Or a link on layout #1 that opens layout#2?

I'd like to start with opening a separate layout. Since I'm new to this I figure that's what would best suit my needs at this time.

My goal is to have the to do list and calendar linked off of all my layout pages so I can check my schedule at any time.

Put them on separate layouts, so they look like a tabbed interface. Then they are just one click away, and you get the benefit of being optimise the whole screen for the purpose.

That part I understand but how do I link two seperate databases, what's the steps. I know how to create a button to goto a layout, but having it in a seperate database is throwing me because the option to brose for the file is not available. So obviously I need to put in some code or indicate it in someway, but I can't quite figure out how.

Thanks

Create a file reference (called data source in FMP 9) to the other file. Then base the layout on this file reference. Voila!

That worked great BUT when I try to add another (calendar)it does not show up in the Layout options.

Manage-Databases-External Datasources-Add

Then

New layouts-Show records from- And I only have the main database, the to do list and manage database options

Now I am using Filemaker Pro 9 and this particular file looks to be made with 8.5

calendar-8.5_I_070211b Do I have to do anything with a FM 8 file to use it or link it in FM 9?

Tried creating a brand new database (budget) and linking that, it didn't work either. Can't seem to get more than one extra external database to show up.

I'm probably missing a simple step.

Any ideas
