hi all.

i need the expertise of the filemaker pros here.

[color:blue]here's what i have:

-i have a text field that constantly gets changed.

-the data in that text field can be edited as far as deleting the whole data in that text field.

[color:green]

my inquiry:

-is there a way that when you click on this field, a date & time stamp will automatically be filled in and then type in the new data?

-is there a way that when the above mentioned is done, editing of the previously entered data won't be allowed as to preserve the integrity of the data that was recently stored?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

um... no, not really.

unless of course i'm looking at it differently.

the effect i'm after is this:

comment1.JPG

the above image shows the blank field(Text Field) in the record...

comment2.JPG

this image shows the same field in the same record with new data. showing the date & time stamp on automatic and the details of that call/notes...

comment3.JPG

this image shows the same record BUT with newly entered data.

what i'm trying to achieve is to be able to add newer details/calls/notes BUT retaining the old ones "as is", in other words... the previous data will not be editable, changed or deleted.

thanks for the speedy reply. :

I would make a related table to store each Note as a seperate record and display the notes in a portal. Then you can have the date and time set up as an AutoEnter in the notes table.

Absolutely. You need a notes table. Give the user a new note button, but no delete or edit button on the portal row. They could have a view button, if the text is too long to display in the portal row.

Editing/Deleting could be allowed in the notes table for only a certain priv set.
