JIM1945 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 i have a field called account number, i only want to enter a 4 digit account# 1234 and after you enter the 4th. digit it will also trip the enter button to bring up that account information. Sure would like some help. i am uning ver 9. thanks
bcooney Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 I would readup on Find Mode, because that is what you're describing.
LaRetta Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 (edited) ...it will also trip the enter button to bring up that account information. The request, as I read it, is for an event trigger to fire after the fourth character is entered without User clicking a button or without exiting the field first. A hypervigilent field is not worth the cycles here, Jim. I suggest a User enters the characters and either clicks a Find button or just hits the enter key, as Barbara is suggesting. bcooney Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 I did see the request for an event trigger, but truthfully ignored it. Sometimes, I feel, a novice asks for a behavior and doesn't realize what a strict interpretation of their needs would entail. I was waiting to see his response to see if he even knew what Find was.
LaRetta Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 ...I feel, a novice asks for a behavior and doesn't realize what a strict interpretation of their needs would entail. Well, I didn't see him self-rated as novice. He's been registered for many years even though he's only posted a few dozen times. I assumed that he knows what Find Mode is; although he placed this in calculations so we might be looking at an auto-enter or lookup field. Regardless, an action has to happen after the fourth character; either by user (hitting enter or exiting the field) or by trigger. :wink2:
JIM1945 Posted September 1, 2007 Author Posted September 1, 2007 laretta, thanks for your help, or should i say thanks for not making me fill stupid in asking for help in my question. I did not know of any way to make this field do what my customer wanted to have happened. To answer bcooney remark reguarding if i knew what a find was, the answer to her question is yes. I have know this since filemaker ver 5.5 and in my little program that i designed for telephone answering service business, i also discovered what a Find does even in my filemaker ver. 9 advanced. I just thought i would throw out the question to find if anyone might know how i use a vb script or a event trigger to make this work. thanks.
