Does the new FileMaker PHP API require FM Server 9 or will it also work with FM Server 8 Advanced?

It requires Server 9.

Note there was a beta that worked with FMSA 8. Looks like you can still get it at http://www.filemaker.com/developers/resources/php/install.html

This beta expires on October 7th, it is actually in the API code. It can be changed - but I'm not sure if there are any legal issues.

I figured out how to do this and tested it, and the change works.
