Can't force FileMaker 6 to ask for password on open

Featured Replies

Hello,

I created a database a few years back (with version 6 pro or version 6 developer, I can't remember), and it always opens with the layout mode unavailable. It never asks for a password.

I seem to remember a keyboard button that you hold down while opening a file to force it to ask you for a password, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have any idea how I can re-gain access to administer this darn database!? I'm sure I have the password, I just can't get it to ask me for it...

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but it seemed like the best choice.

Thanks!

Chris

Hold down the Shift Key when you double click to open the file.

Nah, shift doesn't work... Just tried it.

Neither does Esc, Option, Ctrl, or Apple... Could it be that I did something weird to it in Developer that is causing this problem?

Chris

Is it a runtime?

Not so far as I can tell, it's a .fp5 file...

Ive tried the shift trick on OS X, OS 9, and WinXP - No deals.

Hmm that leaves me at a loss :

Maybe post the file here if possible, prob not an option though considering it's holding data obviously.

Btw on a Mac it's the Apple key but you said you tried that also.

Ok here's a thought. Create a file that needs a password(The same as what you believe the other file PW is. Create a script that opens the file and attach it to a button. This way it will open the file using the correct password. Basically an Opener file.

Worth a try, and the only thing I can think of.

It's the Option (alt) key on a Mac, not Shift.

Is that the same as the Apple key? I don't have a mac keyboard in front of me.......lol

No, the "Apple" key (with the cloverleaf) is known as the Command key.

Interesting tidbit: I read today (in MacWorld) that the new iMac aluminum keyboard no longer has the Apple icon on it; it says "Command" instead; the cloverleaf remains. End of an era (and some confusion for switchers).

Thanks for that Fenton.

Try having Macs in the building that use a "Normal" keyboard. Throws me for a loop everytime I sit at a mac at work......lol
